AIXTRON to Head OLED Display Research

AACHEN, Germany, Sept. 24 -- The German Ministry of Research and Education has given a 3.5 million euro ($3.4 million) grant to a group of researchers headed by AIXTRON to develop organic vapor phase deposition (OVPD) technology for organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) display applications.

OVPD can enable a low-cost, precise, high-throughput process for fabricating OLEDs.

Scientists from TU Braunschweig, TU Chemnitz and the chemical company SynTec GmbH have formed a professional team to bring into production the AIXTRON OVPD technology and to adapt precursors for this new production process geared toward a highly efficient production technology for full-color displays.

A Tricent OVPD tool developed especially for OLED production will be installed at TU Braunschweig to develop displays. TU Chemnitz will develop in situ characterization tools for OVPD and research the deposition process. New high-purity starting materials tailored for use in OVPD will be developed by SynTec GmbH.
