360networks Launches Fiber Optic Infrastructure from NKF Kabel

Vancouver, Nov. 7 -- 360networks and NKF Kabel B.V., a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based fiber optic cable provider Draka Holding N.V., have reached an agreement in which 360networks will purchase and deploy NKF Kabel's JETnet technology in North America. JETnet is a new fiber optic cabling system that uses compressed air to send multiple mini-ducts, each of which can hold up to 60 strands of fiber, into new or previously installed conduit. The compressed air is used to install the mini-ducts quickly and efficiently over long distances, said 360Networks. The deal gives 360networks exclusive use of the new technology for at least an 18-month period. 360networks has already completed testing on the new technology and will begin deployment in Ontario and California.
This innovative system gives us a real competitive advantage. We can save up to 50 per cent on our initial installation costs, said Ron Stevenson, vice-chairman of 360networks. Instead of initially installing a cable with several hundred fiber strands, we have the flexibility to install up to 10 micro-cables over time, each with up to 60 fiber strands. We can install or replace fiber faster to take full advantage of the latest advances in fiber technology. This is a much more cost-effective and advanced strategy than initially installing either a large number of conduits or large quantities of fiber.
360networks offers broadband network and co-location services to telecommunications and data-centric organizations. 360networks is currently developing an 85,000-mile fiber optic network linking more than 100 cities in North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
