Over 4000 attendees will gather for the event, which offers three main program tracks, adding up to 70 total conferences and over 3000 presentations. The following tracks provide in-depth perspectives on the most recent research and innovations:

Nanoscience + Engineering: This comprehensive track features applications in areas such as energy, medicine, information storage, and computing. Work will be presented in the fields of metamaterials, plasmonics, quantum science and technology, nanomedicine, optical trapping, nanostructured thin films, spintronics, nanostructured devices, nanoengineering, and low-dimensional materials.

Organic Photonics + Electronics: The focus of this segment is organic-based materials and devices that advance renewable energy sources. Topics and applications include OLEDs, OFETs (organic field-effect transistors), OHPVs, perovskite PVs, organic and hybrid sensors, bioelectronics, liquid crystals, and molecular machines.

Optical Engineering + Applications: This conference track will discuss developments in optical design and engineering, including applications and photonic devices; x-ray, gamma ray, and particle technologies; image and signal processing, optics and photonics for sustainable energy, remote sensing, astronomical instrumentation, and space optical systems.

O + P 2019 will feature 15 plenary sessions with speakers from around the world sharing recent and promising breakthroughs. Among the presenters, Massimo Mascaro of Google Cloud will discuss “Accelerating Science: How AI and Cloud Computing Can Boost Scientific Progress,” and Martin Gehler of the European Space Agency will present “LISA: Observing Gravitational Waves from Space.”

Other plenary sessions are separated into various technical topics. The Nanoscience + Engineering session features “From Inverse Design to Implementation of Practical (Quantum) Photonics” by Jelena Vuckovic of Stanford University, and “Structured Light for Next-Generation Optical Trapping” presented by Cornelia Denz of Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. The Organic Photonics + Electronics session includes William E. Moerner of Stanford University discussing “Nanophotonics Based on Individual Molecules and Light Gives Rise to 3D Super-Resolution Imaging in Cells and Biomolecular Insights.” Mona Jarrahi of UCLA will discuss “Plasmonics-Enhanced Terahertz Spectroscopy” at the Optical Engineering plenary session. Remaining topics include signal, image, and data processing and remote sensing.

A total of 37 courses taught by experienced professionals in the industry will be offered at the conference, covering topics such as nanoscience, optics and photonics for sustainable energy, deep learning, advanced metrology, and remote sensing. In addition, a job fair sponsored by the SPIE Career Center will be held Aug. 13-14, allowing visitors to connect with recruiters from a wide range of companies and laboratories, including Thorlabs, Raytheon, and Coherent. There will also be over 40 special events, including professional development workshops open to students and career professionals, social networking presentations and receptions, poster sessions, and panel discussions on topics such as intense laser facilities and the role of women scientists in renewable energy.

From Aug. 13-15, SPIE Optics + Photonics 2019 will feature an exhibition of 180 companies showing innovative products and future technologies in the industry. Many technologies will be covered, including test and measurement equipment, fiber optics, nanoprecision products, positioning systems, and LED technology.
