The Use of Vibrational Spectroscopy in Natural Product and Bio-Analysis

Compared to other techniques, vibrational spectroscopy benefits from short analysis times, non-invasiveness, and the potential for screening for chemical and physical properties simultaneously. Furthermore, chemometrical univariate and multivariate data treatment enables efficient spectral interpretation and the establishment of sufficient calibration/validation models. Advanced quantum chemical approaches can further support the challenge of band assignment, especially in case of complex overlapping peak patterns. NIR, attenuated total reflection (ATR), and Raman spectroscopy have been demonstrated as very efficient for even complex qualitative and quantitative attempts in combination with selective reference analytical methods.

Qualitative analysis attempts to determine species and, in some cases, origin, while quantitative analysis attempts to establish chemical and physical parameters. The miniaturization of spectrometers is a popular trend in research and industry, enabling investigations in the field outside the laboratory. The latest technical developments will be discussed, followed by several selected applications in food, medical plant and cancer analysis.

About the presenter

Christian HuckChristian Huck, Ph.D., obtained his doctorate in chemistry in 1998 from the University in Innsbruck, Austria, where he continued to work as an assistant professor until the habilitation in 2006.

In 2013 he began a position as a full professor to the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and in 2015 he began a position as a full professor to the University of Innsbruck, where he is currently head of the Institute of Analytical Chemistry and Radiochemistry and head of the spectroscopy unit.

From 2014 until 2017, Huck worked as a visiting scientist with Professor Yukihiro Ozaki at Kwansei-Gakuin University in Sanda, Hyogo, Japan. He is currently editor-in-chief for Spectrochimica Acta A (Elsevier) and NIR news (Sage), associate editor for Journal of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (JNIRS, Sage) and several others known journals in the broader field of analytical chemistry. In 2023 he was the chair and host of ICNIRS 2023 international conference and is the current vice-president of the Austrian Chemical Society. During the last 15 years, Huck received about 15 international awards including Tomas Hirschfeld, Birth, and SAS Fellowship. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts resulting in an h-index of 65 based on more than 18,000 citations.
