About This Webinar
The silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), also known as Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), is becoming a popular choice of a photodetector in applications where even single photons must be detected. The ability of a SiPM to detect single photons is due to its very high (10^6 – 10^7) internal gain. The goals of this webinar are for you to: 1) develop a strong theoretical understanding of how a SiPM functions; 2) become familiar with its key optoelectronic characteristics; 3) understand the pros and cons of SiPMs. The webinar will also discuss realistic applications which use SiPMs.

Slawomir PiatekPresenter Slawomir S. Piatek is a senior university lecturer of physics at New Jersey Institute of Technology and in this role has been measuring proper motions of nearby galaxies using images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. He has developed a photonics training program for engineers at Hamamatsu Corporation in New Jersey in the role of a science consultant. Also at Hamamatsu, he is involved in popularizing SiPM as a novel photodetector by writing and lecturing about it and by experimenting with the device. Piatek earned a Ph.D. in Physics at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

About Hamamatsu Corporation
Hamamatsu Corporation is the North American subsidiary of Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (Japan), a leading manufacturer of devices for the generation and measurement of IR, visible and UV light. These devices include detectors such as photodiodes, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM), IR detectors and photomultiplier tubes (PMT). Hamamatsu Corp.'s SiPMs (called MPPC) are available in a wide variety, including single-element detectors and arrays of various sizes. Modules with a built-in SiPM and components to operate the detector are also available. In addition, Hamamatsu Corp. offers image sensors, cameras, light sources and specialized systems. Hamamatsu products are used throughout the world in scientific, industrial and commercial applications. For more information please visit www.hamamatsu.com.
