Determining absolute modulation transfer function (MTF) measurement accuracy comes with challenges — including the need to consider all influencing variables. This presentation details an approach that ensures correlation and traceability of these results to a reference.

MTF measurement data of optics from manufacturing must correlate with data from development. In optics manufacturing, the achievable measurement accuracy determines rejects and consistent quality. Measurement of the MTF is the recognized standard when evaluating the image quality of optical systems. There are different measurement methods and systems for determining the MTF of optical systems, depending on the type of sample and its application.

These will be explained throughout the presentation as Stauss highlights different measurement targets (visual contrast targets, sine, edge, slit), different units (lp/mm, cyc/mm, lp/deg, cyc/px), and measurement configurations (infinite-finite setup, finite-finite setup, non-imaging afocal setup).

When determining a correct MTF, the optical sample properties, such as the sample’s focal length and aperture, are also relevant. The influence of these parameters on the determination of the MTF will be presented.

About the presenter

Benjamin StaussBenjamin Stauss is leading the research and development division ‘Image Quality’ at TRIOPTICS GmbH, a company with more than 30 years of experience in optical characterization and assembly of lenses and camera modules, with headquarters located in Wedel, Germany. He joined TRIOPTICS nine years ago as a research & development engineer for optical camera testing equipment.

His working life is dedicated to optics and metrology applications. He studied optics and image processing at the University of Applied Science in Darmstadt, Germany.

Before his job at TRIOPTICS, he developed optical concepts for car headlamps at Automotive Lighting, a Magneti Marelli company. He was involved in developing the world’s first FULL-LED headlamp and adaptive LED matrix lights.

At TRIOPTICS, he develops methods for the characterization of camera sensors and modules in active alignment and end-of-line testing systems. He is now leading the R&D Division, Image Quality, caring about the development and product management of all TRIOPTICS metrology products quantifying image quality.
