There are 422 million people worldwide living with diabetes1, and current methods for monitoring blood glucose levels are painful, invasive, and can potentially require surgical procedures. Determining a fast and reliable non-invasive method for monitoring glucose levels is a significant milestone on the path to better diabetes management. Multiple non-invasive monitoring approaches have been developed, but each has weaknesses that detract from their ability to become a standard method. Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy takes advantage of the specific glucose fingerprint to identify concentration levels in blood with increasing accuracy.

Quantum cascade laser (QCL) sources are ideally suited for this application given their high spectral intensity and have enabled researchers to develop more advanced techniques for non-invasive monitoring. Methods such as photoacoustic spectroscopy, photothermal spectroscopy, and ATR spectroscopy have been augmented by using QCL-IR light and advanced machine-learning programs to yield fast and accurate glucose concentration levels. The development of these techniques demonstrates the feasibility to achieve a fast, reliable non-invasive method for monitoring blood glucose levels.

Jason SorgerJason Sorger is an engineer with over five years of experience in development of cutting-edge laser technologies. He has a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Utah and a Master of Science in physics from San Diego State University.

Sorger is currently the senior field service engineer for DRS Daylight Solutions, the world’s leading provider of best-in-class mid-infrared, quantum cascade laser (QCL) sources for life sciences, research, industrial, and defense industries. Sorger was most recently a laser engineer with Daylight Solutions specializing in the design, build, and verification of next-generation laser technologies. Jason is a native Californian but spent time living in Utah and Colorado where he enjoyed exploring the mountains in both winter and summer. He currently resides in San Diego but continues to get into the mountains to snowboard when he’s not spending time appreciating the sunshine and surfing at the beach.
