William Brown presents a history and future projection of lasers in dentistry, starting with the early wavelength research into laser applications for dental procedures. He also covers the current state of laser wavelengths, technologies, and applications in dentistry. And he looks into where specific technologies should be in the future — for example, DPSS, fiber, and other lasers. Unlike with many medical specialties, dentists worldwide have been very slow to adopt lasers in their practices. But with the latest laser technologies, their lower costs, improved graphic user interfaces, more comprehensive laser training, and significant benefits to the patient regarding increased comfort and faster recovery, the rate of adoption is steadily growing.

About the presenter:
William (Bill) E. Brown joined BIOLASE in 2002, taking on his current role as vice president of innovation and business development in 2018. He has been involved in laser dentistry since 1987, along with the research, development and commercialization of over a dozen dental instruments. He is a fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery (ASLMS) and the International Academy of Dental-Facial Esthetics (IADFE), and he is a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Prior to joining BIOLASE, he co-founded Kreativ Inc., an international advanced dental equipment company that was acquired in 1999 by Welch Allyn Inc. Brown served as director of new product development and board director for Welch Allyn/Kreativ Inc.
He also served as vice president of sales and marketing at HGM Medical Laser Systems Inc., an international medical laser manufacturer, and held senior management positions at Humphrey Instruments, the American Optical Division of Warner-Lambert, Coherent Medical, and Sharplan Lasers/Laser Industries. Brown holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from The University of Alabama.
