Among the trends in machine vision cameras, one of the most noteworthy is the growing emphasis on small, modestly priced cameras. While plenty of vision systems need so-called higher-end capabilities — such as very high resolution, multispectral capture, prism-based color imaging, high-speed line scan, and other premium features — by far, the highest volumes of machine vision cameras being sold are those that are small in size and small, or smallish, in price.
This demand results in a wide array of compact, affordable cameras being created by many different manufacturers. While these cameras all share many common traits — such as sensor sizes, resolutions, interfaces, and basic operational feature sets — some key differences exist across different brands of small cameras that can factor heavily into the plans of vision system designers, depending on the types of systems they are creating.
