About This Webinar
Developing a high-performance fluorescence microscope is a challenging task in which all subsystems must work in harmony. In this webinar, Joseph Mulley and Jim Feeks from IDEX Health & Science introduce key system architecture decision points and discuss their pros and cons. By properly considering the impact of each decision on the full optical system, it is possible to design a more cohesive microscope that achieves a desired performance. This presentation then introduces the Melles Griot XPLAN CCG Lens Series and Dover Motion DOF-5 precision Z-stage and explains how these components can enable a high-performance breadboard microscope under an accelerated timeline.

Key benefits include:

  • Superior image quality: Capture up to four times more area while maintaining optical performance across 100% of the field of view, ensuring exceptional results and significantly boosting throughput.
  • Accelerated development: Receive optics tailored to a specific application within six weeks, eliminating development delays and up-front nonrecurring engineering expenses.
  • Stable, high-throughput scanning: Benefit from reliable XY sample positioning and tip-tilt correction for seamless image tiling.
  • DOF-5 with easy-to-use software and integrated controller.

Join this educational webinar led by industry experts who will provide insightful knowledge of fluorescence microscope design and demonstrate how to stay ahead of the curve by maximizing an imaging system for an application. Don't miss this opportunity to upgrade imaging capabilities.

Who should attend:
R&D scientists, engineers, and manufacturers who work in life science imaging and instrument development. Those who work in microscopy, optics, optical components, and test & measurement in biophotonics applications.

About the presenters:
While Joseph Mulley has been with IDEX Health & Science for nearly 13 years, his overall focus and experience has been in lens design for 19 years. Starting out by developing expertise in zooming microscopes, his work expanded into the fields of semiconductor inspection and broader microscopy. His more recent areas of expertise include water-immersion microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. Besides lens design, Mulley has built and tested his own designs as well as transitioning them from prototypes to final products. Combining design expertise with manufacturing know-how has given him unique experience and methods that he has continued honing at IDEX, where he is regularly asked to solve unprecedented optical design challenges in a way that is creative, practical, and highly manufacturable. He has been a contributor to the SPIE Optics + Photonics conference as both an author and a conference chair. Mulley received his Bachelor of Science degree in optics from the University of Rochester.

Jim Feeks, Ph.D., has extensive experience designing and testing fluorescence microscopes, with a deep understanding of imaging optics and how they interact with the overall optical system, including filters, illumination, autofocus, and optomechanics. He graduated with a doctorate in optics from the University of Rochester in 2018, with a doctoral dissertation titled "Two-Photon Adaptive Optics Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Ophthalmoscopy." In the course of this work, Feeks designed and built the first adaptive optics ophthalmoscope equipped with fluorescence lifetime imaging capability and demonstrated its efficacy by imaging fluorescently tagged ganglion cells in the retina of living mice. He has been with IDEX Health & Science for 6 1/2 years, working on multiple source-to-sensor fluorescence microscope systems from the design phase through to the start of volume production. In that time, he has led efforts as varied as system architecture selection, design of imaging and non-imaging systems, design verification testing, and production readiness efforts.
