The FR-E+ SuperBright microfocus rotating anode x-ray source is a suitable home laboratory instrument for macromolecular crystallography. Available from Rigaku Americas Corp., the synchrotron-class instrument produces intensities of 1.6 × 10¹¹ x-rays/mm²/s, twice the flux of competing technology, according to the company. It features a true 70 × 70-μm focal spot that allows it to deliver a small and intense beam suited to the tiny crystals often encountered in structural biology research. For high-throughput phasing applications, the system is available in several dual-wavelength configurations. It can screen crystals where no diffraction was seen on a standard system and collect full data sets on samples where only low-resolution reflections would normally be observed.
