SuperK Gauss Spectral Filter

BIRKERØD, Denmark, March 4, 2011 — For optical coherence tomography (OCT) and white-light interferometry (WLI) applications, NKT Photonics A/S has launched the SuperK Gauss spectral filter for use with SuperK Extreme supercontinuum lasers. It transforms the broadband output of the laser to a Gaussian output and provides ultrawide-bandwidth spectral output in two bands, with a tunable center wavelength for each. Manual shutters provide port control.
For OCT, the filter provides high-power spectral output centered at 800 and 1300 nm, through single-mode fiber using the SuperK fiber delivery system. Similar configurations are available for WLI applications. The filter enables tuning of the center wavelength of each band over 200 nm. It connects easily to the SuperK Extreme and shares the same plug-and-play platform.
Wavelength split point is 1050 nm, fiber output is a collimated or fiber-coupled/angle polished connector, spectral width is from 170 to 200 nm, and output power is from 70 to 700 mW.
The wide spectral bandwidth of the laser improves the axial resolution in OCT and WLI applications. The combination of the Gauss filter and the supercontinuum laser provides a smooth spectrum and reduces the number of image artifacts, providing users with images exhibiting increased resolution and detail.
Results showing resolution down to 2 µm in tissue images have been obtained. The company says that the laser achieves better resolution than superluminescent diodes and compares well with Ti:sapphire lasers.
The SuperK industrial supercontinuum lasers and accessories are used in biomedical instrumentation for applications in imaging and analysis. All of the lasers are based on a telecom-grade monolithic fiber platform, do not require alignment or warm-up time, and have long lifetimes.
