Leica Microsystems GmbH has unveiled the SD6000 spinning-disk confocal module for the AF6000 LX live-cell station, a confocal microscopy system that can measure total internal reflection fluorescence. The module reduces phototoxicity, enabling long-term cellular experiments. It enables imaging of living cells in real time because it has a rotating pinhole that scans all image points in the focal plane simultaneously at a rate of 1000 Hz and because the module contains a sensitive fluorescence electron-multiplying CCD camera. Instead of a laser, it uses a white light source that the company says is easy to maintain. The device employs software that guides users through experiments, rather than having them hunt for icons on a menu bar.
