Single-Mode Fiber Couplers with Light Fulcrum Technology
Siskiyou CorporationRequest Info
The SM series of single-mode fiber couplers from Siskiyou Corp. uses a long focal-length steering lens, located close to the rear focal plane of a microscope objective, to create a light fulcrum. This optical arrangement effectively relocates the focused spot to the focal plane of a microscope objective.
Steering lens motion tilts the input beam entering the objective, reducing the motion of the focused spot by the ratio of the steering lens focal length to the objective focal length, thereby increasing adjustment precision. The translation of the steering lens has a negligible effect on the angle of incidence of the input beam as it enters the fiber.
With a 20X objective, the ratio is 32:1, so a quarter-turn of the 80-pitch adjustment screw moves the focused spot approximately 2.5 m, while a quarter-turn of the same screw in coupling systems that don't incorporate the light fulcrum provides a 78-m translation.
With the SM couplers incorporating the light fulcrum, submicron adjustments can be easily made, reducing the cost of single-mode fiber coupling hardware.
