Silicon Oil-Immersion Lenses

HAMBURG, Germany, June 21, 2011 — Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has released two silicon oil-immersion objectives, the UPLSAPO30×S and UPLSAPO60×S.
The new lenses are suitable for live-cell experiments, particularly those investigating thick samples or requiring long-term imaging. Users can generate bright images at higher resolution because silicon oil significantly improves optical performance in comparison to conventional oil- or water-based approaches.
Unlike water, silicon oil is stable, viscous and of low volatility, so it does not dry out over time, and it does not absorb moisture from the surrounding air like glycerol does, according to the company.
Each of the objectives features a correction collar, making it easy to reduce spherical aberration via simple adjustments, optimizing resolution, contrast and fluorescence performance.
The UPLSAPO30×S has 30× magnification and a numerical aperture of 1.05, and it produces highly resolved images of an extensive sample area.
The UPLSAPO60×S offers magnification of 60× and a numerical aperture of 1.3, enabling researchers to produce detailed live-sample images using fluorescence, confocal laser scanning and multiphoton excitation techniques. It also is suitable for high-resolution 3-D imaging because of its improved spherical aberration correction and a short working distance of 0.3 mm.
