Polymer Optical Fiber
Toray Industries Inc.
The RAYTELA® Polymer Optical Fiber from Toray Industries Inc. achieves 34,500 repeated bends in physical endurance testing to stave off breakage.
The high-numerical-aperture optical fiber is designed for medical applications for endoscopy illumination and ophthalmic lighting equipment. Its cladding and core design construction results in the fiber being more reflective and able to transmit and reflect light at a large, 79° angle through the core, providing less light loss at all bend radius and up to 1.8 × wider light broadcasting at the distal end.
The fiber is constructed with an outside fluorinated polymer cladding and internal core of polymethyl methacrylate developed by Toray industries. The unique construction of cladding and core increases the overall fiber’s strength and increases its resistance to surface damage.
