Laser Diode Drivers/Controllers
Portable Power Systems Inc.
ST. LOUIS, July 26, 2011 — The PPS series analog laser diode drivers/controllers manufactured by Portable Power Systems Inc. can operate in pulsed or continuous-wave mode. Depending upon the unit, voltages range from 0 to 250 V, and currents range from 0 to 300 A. Rise times of 15 μs and pulse widths of 25 μs are possible.
Most units house a universal input power supply that accepts AC input voltages of 85 to 264 VAC. Higher power units can work with an external power supply to reach significantly higher power levels. The current can be controlled by a potentiometer on the front panel or by accepting a 0 to 10-V analog signal via the rear panel.
The compliance voltage also can be adjusted via a potentiometer on the front panel. The units have “standby,” “laser on” and “emergency stop” indicators. Safety features include a current limit control, an emergency stop push button, and remote and coolant interlock. The units are supplied with an operations manual, cables and a two-year warranty.
Photonics applications include supplying voltage and current to laser diodes, bars and arrays both in continuous-wave and pulsed modes. The drivers can be used for welding or cutting metal, paint stripping, illumination and scanning the ocean floors for mines. Medical applications include photodynamic therapy and vein cauterization.
