1 × 16 Multimode Optical Switch
DiCon Fiberoptics Inc.Request Info
RICHMOND, Calif., May 20, 2010 — DiCon Fiberoptics has released a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) optical switch made with multimode 50- or 62.5-µm core fiber with a port count of up to 1 × 16 in a compact module. This allows multimode optical switch systems requiring higher port counts, primarily used in military and defense applications, to be reduced in overall weight, size and power requirements.
The fiber optic switch is not only a standard commercial off-the-shelf module but also available in custom configurations. Typical applications include secure switching and video distribution.
Featuring proven MEMS technology and based on a platform that has been qualified to Telcordia GR-1221 (equivalent to certain methods from MIL-STD-883), the fiber optic switch has passed billions of toggling cycles and survived high levels of shock and vibration, temperature cycling, damp heat, dry heat and other adverse conditions, making it suitable for use by military and avionics customers.
Packaged in a compact housing measuring 90 × 55 × 12.5 mm, it consumes <700 mW of electrical power when controlled with an I2C or RS-232 interface, and 1.5 W when controlled via transistor-transistor logic. The port count can be specified anywhere from 1 × 2 up to 1 × 16, and other configurations and special fiber types are also available in addition to the standard switch configurations.
