Simultaneous Insights into Cell’s Chemical, Physical Makeup Come into View
Building on its previously-introduced method of mid-infrared photothermal (MIP) microscopy, a team at Boston University has introduced mid-IR photothermal dynamic imaging (PDI). Compared to MIP microscopy, PDI provides better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and imaging speed, and delivers information from a sample that is currently unattainable from current photothermal microscopy.

EU-Funded Laser System Makes Functional Surface Development Ultrafast
Collaborators on the EU-funded LAMpAS (high throughput laser structuring with multiscale periodic feature sizes for advanced surface functionalities) project have reached the target parameters of a kilowatt-class ultrafast laser. TRUMPF developed the pulsed laser, which in tests exceeded 1.5 kW of average optical power.

Fiber-Optic Polarization Control Technologies for Emerging Applications Fiber-Optic Polarization Control Technologies for Emerging Applications
Tue, Dec 14, 2021 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST
Optical system developers are faced with a range of polarization control technology choices for emerging high-performance photonic systems. This webinar surveys the available polarization technologies for emerging applications, including directed energy, quantum computing, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and photonics testing. Henry Yaffe, Ph.D., Vice President of Technologies at Luna Innovations, details the advantages and limitations of each technology and how to choose the best option for specific requirements. Yaffe also explains advanced control modes—such as scrambling, tracking, stabilization, depolarization, and randomizing—and how these functions are implemented. Practical examples are given to show how polarization controllers can be applied for the development and test of modern photonic systems. Presented by Luna Innovations, Inc.

Epitaxy and Processing: VCSELs, QCLs, and InGaAs Detectors Epitaxy and Processing: VCSELs, QCLs, and InGaAs Detectors
Thu, Dec 16, 2021 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM EST
The webinar offers perspective to industry specialists and experts who share a technological interest in the epitaxy, processing, and integration of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), and indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) devices. Wlodzimierz Strupinski, Ph.D., and Marcin Gebski, Ph.D., of VIGO System SA explain the manufacturing process for achieving state-of-the-art compound semiconductors and devices. They are joined by colleagues, Iwona Pasternak, Ph.D., Walery Kolkowski, Ph.D., and Jacek Strupinski for a live Q&A and industry discussion at the end of the webinar. Presented by VIGO System SA.
