Chip-Based Optical Sensors Developed with Incredible Sensitivity
An optical whispering gallery mode resonator can spin light around the circumference of a tiny sphere millions of times, creating an ultrasensitive microchip-based sensor for multiple applications. The type of sensor that consists of solid spheres is not compatible with microfabrication methods. However, researchers developed a way to grow on-chip glass microspherical shells that potentially can be used for motion, temperature, pressure or biochemical sensing.

Flexible, Stretchable Photonics Devices Made with Chalcogenide
A method for making photonic devices that can bend and stretch without damage could find uses in cables to connect computer devices, or in diagnostic and monitoring systems that could be attached to the skin. Researchers used a specialized kind of glass called chalcogenide for their device.

Wave Mixing on Artificial Atom Could Be Used for Building Quantum Electronics
Wave Mixing on Artificial Atom Could Be Used for Building Quantum Electronics
Scientists have demonstrated quantum wave mixing (QWM) on a single superconducting artificial atom. In their exploration of the different regimes of QWM, they showed that superposed and coherent states of light were mapped into a quantized spectrum of narrow peaks, and they found that the number of peaks was determined by the number of interacting photons.
