Ultrathin Metalens Captures Chiral, Spectral Images Simultaneously
Ultrathin Metalens Captures Chiral, Spectral Images Simultaneously
An ultracompact planar lens has been engineered to simultaneously form two images of the same object, with opposite helicity and within a single field-of-view. The chiral and spectral properties of the object can be simultaneously probed across the visible spectrum with only the ultrathin lens and a camera. The ultrathin surface of the lens can form an image and at the same time resolve polarization and spectral information of the object, thus integrating the functions of polarization and dispersive optical components.

Aerial Spectroscopy Reveals Complex Resource Economies in Peruvian Forests
Aerial Spectroscopy Reveals Complex Resource Economies in Peruvian Forests
A high-fidelity imaging spectrometer onboard the Carnegie Airborne Observatory has enabled the creation of forest canopy maps of leaf nitrogen, phosphorous, and mass over a large portion of the biosphere covering nearly 200 million acres of Peru. Researchers from the Carnegie Institution for Science, using airborne imaging spectroscopy in combination with geospatial modeling, described a continuum of forest canopy nitrogen, phosphorous, and leaf mass relationships that are sensitive to the range of geophysical conditions found throughout the region.

Mirror-Enhanced Microscopy Provides New Info about Cell Behavior
Mirror-Enhanced Microscopy Provides New Info about Cell Behavior
A novel technique for growing cells on miniature mirrors and imaging them using super-resolution microscopy may provide a way to view cell structures at a micron scale. The technique uses light waves to create interference patterns as light passes through the cell on the way to the mirror, which reflects the light back through the cell.

Capasso Lab's Planar Metalens Could Revolutionize Smartphones
In an exclusive interview with Photonics Media, renowned scientist Federico Capasso shares his research findings that a new metasurface lens material could ultimately replace traditional optics in microscopes, cameras and smartphones. We examine a new IR sensor that can get you into the inner-workings of food, plants, medications and more, without any physical contact. We’ve got the low-down on this year’s CLEO show, and we take a whirlwind tour of the photonics and optics hub that is Rochester, New York.
