"Employing laser holographic techniques, we achieved rapid and label-free identification of bacterial species at the single-bacterium level with a single-shot measurement," said KAIST professor YongKeun Park. "This means the present method can be utilized as a prescreening test for point-of-care bacterial diagnosis for various applications including medicine and food hygiene."

This talk will address two recently reported nanoscale systems, both involving high-density porphyrin constructs. First, porphyrin nanovesicles have been developed that can release drugs in response to near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, leading to enhanced drug deposition in irradiated tumors. Second, a family of highly light-absorbing nanoparticles have been developed for safe and real-time gastrointestinal photoacoustic imaging following oral administration to mice.

Because of the increasing importance of the key technology photonics, the show will expand by one hall to 55,000 square meters. Taking place in parallel at the ground of Messe Munich is the international scientific elite’s get-together at the World of Photonics Congress.
The show will have three focus topics for all facets of photonics: laser systems for manufacturing, biophotonics and medical technology, and the new highlight, imaging. Trends are additive manufacturing, 3-D printing, ultrashort-pulse lasers and 3-D x-ray microscopy.
