Transient Absorption Helps Distinguish Excitation Values
A team from the Julius Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and the University of Ottawa has found a solution to a problem that has plagued researchers since the 1970s. The team envisions future applications in the probing of interactions in plasmonics, Auger recombination, exciton correlations in quantum dots, exciton interactions in two-dimensional materials and in molecules, multiphonon scattering, and other areas.

Nanoscale Spectroscopy Supports Optoelectronic Device Architectures
2D semiconductors based on heterostructures are attracting attention as potential next-generation materials for the electronics industry. However, it is challenging to commercialize these materials because the physical properties of their quasiparticles themselves cannot be precisely controlled. Researchers at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and ITMO University addressed this bottleneck, producing a tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) spectroscopy system that controlled the quasiparticles of a 2D material in a small space. The spectroscopy system dynamically controls the physical properties of quasiparticles under room temperature conditions.

Chip-Scale Spectrometer Points to Portable Instrumentation
Scientists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have developed an approach to chip-scale spectrometry that offers both high spectral resolution and optical bandwidth. The researchers designed and developed an integrated spectrometer by tailoring the dispersion of mode splitting in a photonic molecule to identify the spectral information at different free-spectral ranges (FSR).

FPGA-Based Data Compression Drives Brain Imaging Performance Gains

To help broaden the use of single-photon avalanche diode cameras for multispeckle diffuse correlation spectroscopy, researchers at the University of Edinburgh developed a data compression scheme for a large-pixel-count SPAD camera using a field-programmable gate array. The camera system’s large sensor array enabled a substantial signal-to-noise ratio gain over a single-pixel system. The researchers demonstrated an SNR gain of 110, with respect to single-pixel multispeckle DCS, using half of the 192 × 128 SPAD array.

Researchers at Stony Brook University developed a neural network model that uses terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to evaluate burns and predict healing outcomes. The latest work builds on a previous advancement in which the researchers developed a portable, hand-held imaging device for fast THz-TDS imaging of burn injuries, which aims to make the method practical for clinical use.

Metasurface Spectrometer Points to On-Chip System Integration

Researchers at Heriot-Watt University tailored and controlled dispersion using a single metasurface based on a multifoci metalens design. The researchers developed a compact, high-resolution spectrometer that could enable spectral analysis and information processing with an on-chip, integrated photonics platform. The researchers’ metalens design is based on wavelength and phase multiplexing, and it can simultaneously realize wavelength splitting and light focusing. The metasurface spectrometer can split and focus light beams of different wavelengths at predesigned positions on a focal plane, accurately mapping wavelength information into its focal points located on the same plane.
