plano

A plano in optics describes a lens, mirror, or other optical component that has one flat (plane) surface. The term is typically used in combination with another term that describes the curvature of the opposite surface.

Plano-convex lens: A lens with one flat surface and one convex (curved outward) surface. It is often used to focus light.

Plano-concave lens:
A lens with one flat surface and one concave (curved inward) surface. It is used to diverge light.

Key characteristics and applications of plano optical components include:

Flat surface: The plano surface does not contribute to the optical power of the lens or mirror but can serve as a reference surface for alignment or mounting.

Specific uses: Plano surfaces are used in various optical devices and systems, including collimating lenses, beam expanders, and optical windows.
