free-abrasive machining

The process whereby a rotating wheel carries grains of an abrasive, suspended in a vehicle, across the surface of the optical glass to be ground. The workpieces are forced downward by pneumatic cylinders driving pressure plates that fit within the retaining ring. The machine for polishing uses the same method with a solid aluminum plate and pad cemented to the plate in place of the hardened grinding process.
