Zecotek Receives Second Order from Hamamatsu

SINGAPORE, Nov. 22, 2013 — Zecotek Photonics Inc.’s imaging subsidiary has received a $1.5 million order for scintillation crystals from partner Hamamatsu Photonics, the company said Thursday. As with the first, this second order will be used by a third party OEM of positron emission tomography (PET) medical scanners.

Zecotek Imaging Systems Pte. Ltd. will provide the OEM with lutetium fine silicate (LFS) scintillation crystals made through a patented process that gives them high light yields and ultrafast decay times, which allow for faster and higher-resolution operation of medical and industrial imaging devices, Zecotek said.

In July, Zecotek and Hamamatsu Photonics announced a strategic partnership to manufacture photodetectors, integrated detector modules and associated electronics and data-acquisition modules for imaging applications. In early August, Hamamatsu placed its first order for $500,000 in LFS scintillation crystals.

“Hamamatsu is actively marketing Zecotek’s patented LFS scintillation crystals,” said Dr. A.F. Zerrouk, chairman, president and CEO of Zecotek Photonics Inc. “PET manufacturers are recognizing the cost/performance/IP advantages of using the LFS scintillation crystal. Our joint imaging projects are well on their way.”

The LFS scintillation crystals are manufactured under contract by the Beijing Opto-Electronics Technology Co., a subsidiary of North-China Research Institute of Electronics-Optics.

scintillation crystal
A scintillation crystal, also known simply as a scintillator, is a material that emits light when it interacts with ionizing radiation such as gamma rays, x-rays, or charged particles. The emitted light, known as scintillation light, is typically in the visible or ultraviolet range and is proportional to the energy deposited by the incident radiation in the crystal. scintillation crystal suppliers → Scintillation crystals are commonly used in radiation detection and measurement...
