ZEISS Acquires Longstanding Collaborator Pi Imaging

ZEISS, via Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH, acquired all equity shares of longtime partner Pi Imaging Technology SA, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Pi Imaging Technology now operates as Pi Imaging Technology SA — a ZEISS company. ZEISS is retaining the Lausanne location and all employees.

The Swiss-based sensing provider focuses on the development of single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays and image sensors. Founded in 2018, the company was a partner on the development of what it called a world-first prototype megapixel SPAD image sensor. 

According to Michael Albiez, head of ZEISS Research Microscopy Solutions, the acquisition aims to combine the capabilities of Pi's SPAD technology with ZEISS' microscopy solutions, particularly for life sciences applications.
