Perception and sensor technology startup VoxelSensors has raised €5 million ($5.4 million) in a seed funding round. The company plans to use the funding to further develop its company roadmap, hire employees, and strengthen business engagements with customers in the U.S. and Asia. VoxelSensors’ patented Switching Pixels Active Event Sensor technology features ultralow power and ultralow latency 3D perception sensors designed to resolve current limitations in XR/AR/MR/VR applications. The laser beam scanning-based 3D perception technology is able to perform sequential construction of 3D information, localizing active laser points or structures in space, at a 100-MHz update rate and with an energy budget of 6 photons per voxel to integrate accurate and reliable 3D perception. According to the company, by serializing the depth acquisition via scanning triangulation, the system has low computational complexity, since no stereo-matching of complex images is needed. The technology is targeted for consumer electronics and enterprise AR/VR/MR wearables markets. In December 2022, VoxelSensors entered into a strategic collaboration with OQmented, a provider of microelectrochemical systems- (MEMS)-based AR/VR display and 3D sensing solutions. The collaboration focuses on the system integration and commercialization of VoxelSensors’ Switching Pixels 3D perception system for AR/VR/MR and XR devices, enabled through OQmented’s Lissajous scan pattern that provides faster and more efficient scanning compared to raster scanning. VoxelSensors then revealed its Switching Pixels solution during the CES show in January.
