Veeco to Expand Manufacturing Capabilities for Laser Annealing Tech

PLAINVIEW, N.Y., March 4, 2021 — Veeco Instruments will expand its manufacturing capabilities in San Jose, Calif., to meet demand for advanced laser annealing technology for semiconductor technology companies. Veeco manufactures thin-film and semiconductor process equipment. Its new SEMI-compliant facility will serve as the company’s center for development and production of laser annealing and advanced packaging lithography systems for semiconductor applications.

The new leased facility will feature approximately 70,000 sq ft of manufacturing and engineering lab space, which is nearly double that of the company’s current San Jose facility, and 30,000 sq ft of office space.

Glossary
laser annealing
Laser annealing is a process that involves using a laser beam to heat and modify the microstructure of a material, typically a thin film or surface layer, with the objective of improving its properties. The term "annealing" refers to the heat treatment of a material to alter its physical or chemical characteristics, often to enhance its mechanical, electrical, or optical properties. Key features of laser annealing include: Localized heating: Laser annealing allows for precise and localized...
lithography
Lithography is a key process used in microfabrication and semiconductor manufacturing to create intricate patterns on the surface of substrates, typically silicon wafers. It involves the transfer of a desired pattern onto a photosensitive material called a resist, which is coated onto the substrate. The resist is then selectively exposed to light or other radiation using a mask or reticle that contains the pattern of interest. The lithography process can be broadly categorized into several...
