Veeco Receives Order for GaN Production Systems

Veeco Instruments Inc. of Woodbury, N.Y., has received a $10 million order to supply its GaNzilla metallorganic chemical vapor deposition production systems to Lumileds Lighting of San Jose, Calif., as part of a multiyear agreement for additional systems.

The equipment is key to the high-volume production of GaN-based LEDs, which are used in traffic and automotive lights, and for cell phone and larger liquid crystal display screen backlighting. The deposition step is a determining factor in the brightness and functionality of the devices.

Michael C. Holt, CEO of Lumileds, said the company is looking forward to working with Veeco to expand its GaN production program. Veeco's TurboDisc technology uses a high-speed rotating disk deposition technique.

gan-based leds
Gallium nitride-based light-emitting diodes (GaN-based LEDs) are semiconductor devices that emit light when an electric current passes through them. These LEDs are constructed using gallium nitride (GaN) as the semiconductor material. GaN-based LEDs have gained prominence in the field of solid-state lighting due to their superior performance in terms of energy efficiency, brightness, and color quality compared to traditional light sources. Key points about GaN-based LEDs: Semiconductor...
