The University of Rochester's Institute of Optics has launched a campaign to establish an endowed chair honoring Robert E. Hopkins, former director of the institute and former president of the Optical Society of America. During his tenure at Rochester, Hopkins was pivotal in anticipating the impact of lasers and optical fibers on the field of optics as he built and strengthened the university's solid-state physics and quantum optics programs. The institute has established a committee of alumni to lead the fund-raising campaign; those interested in the project may contact Dennis Hall at (716) 275-2134 or Duncan Moore at (716) 275-4151 at the Institute of Optics.
