EWING, N.J., Oct. 8 -- Universal Display Corp., a developer of flat-panel display technology, announced it has been awarded a two-year $2,013,725 cooperative agreement by the US Army Research Laboratories (ARL) to develop technology to produce flexible, low-power consumption OLED displays and communication components for use in advanced, next-generation mobile communication devices. ARL is funding $1,200,000; the remaining $813,725 is funded as "cost share" by the company and its subcontractors. In addition, ARL has an option to extend the agreement with a third-year, $2,850,000 program in which ARL would provide additional funds of $2,000,000, with the company and its subcontractors contributing $850,000 in cost share.
The company will focus on developing components for the universal communication device (UCD), a compact cell-phone-like communication device with an extendable flexible OLED display that offers low-power, full-color and full motion video capabilities to provide both military and commercial users with advanced voice and data communication capabilities.
