The Japanese Institute of Physical and Chemical Research has established a physics research center at the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. The center will nurture international cooperation in the physics community, focusing initially on theoretical physics and later on experimental physics. It will host 30 scientists each year, including postdoctoral and five-year fellows. A recent decision by the Japanese parliament allotting $2 million in funding paved the way for the research center's founding.
