UV LED Firm SETi Announces Acquisition, Partnership

Sensor Electronic Technology Inc. (SETI) has signed a long-term agreement with Psoria-Shield Inc. of Tampa, Fla., to develop and manufacture the UV LED light source for the Psoria-Light phototherapy system.

SETI has also acquired the commercial operations of UV LED firm Nitek Inc., also of Columbia, expanding its production capacity and adding to its technology offerings.

SETI will be the exclusive provider of the light source used in Psoria-Light, with the goal of increasing performance and reducing cost, the company said. Seti plans to integrate its manufacturing process for 308-nm LEDs that emit up to 2 mW at 20 mA drive current in a light source that delivers over 400 mW of optical power.

Such performance and associated cost improvements should make SETI LEDs a compelling solution for UV dermatology treatments, the company said.

Nitek, which Seti acquired earlier this month, has developed technology to manufacture deep-ultraviolet (DUV) LEDs in a cost-effective, high-volume process. The company was founded in 2004

"This acquisition increases SETI's DUV … capacity, while also bringing additional technology to reduce our costs," said Emmanuel Lakios, president and CEO of SETI. "The net result is that it allows us to reduce the adoption time of cost-sensitive volume markets such as water and air disinfection."

SETI produces more than 100 million DUV LEDs per year. With the acquisition of Nitek's commercial UV LED operations, the company said it has become the world's largest UV-focused LED developer and manufacturer.
