US Military Awards Boston Company $100,000

Via its Small Business Technology Transfer program, the US Department of Defense has awarded approximately $100,000 to Boston Micromachines Corp. of Watertown, Mass., to develop better communications on the battlefield. The company, in conjunction with its research partner, Boston University, will use the funds to begin development of the Secure Communicating Optical Ultrasmall Transponder (SCOUT).

The instrument will use a microelectromechanical systems-deformable mirror and a simple optical component to return reflected light to its point of origin, allowing for improved and rapid battlefield identification of friendly soldiers, vehicles and aircraft.

Glossary
microelectromechanical systems
Refers to micron-size complex machines that have physical dimensions suitable for the fabrication of optical switches for use in state-of-the-art communications networks.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
