Trojan Technologies to Supply UV Drinking-Water Facility

LONDON, Ontario, July 1 -- Trojan Technologies Inc. has received a $2 million purchase order from the City of Seattle to supply ultraviolet (UV) equipment for Seattle's new drinking water installation. Trojan said it will be the largest municipal UV drinking water installation in the world and the first large municipal drinking water plant in the US to use UV light as part of its disinfection process.

The facility will treat up to 180 million gallons of water a day and will serve nearly a million people when it becomes operational in 2004. Trojan will supply 13 UV systems to CH2MHILL Constructors Inc., which is building the facility.

Trojan's water treatment systems use UV light to destroy water-borne pathogens. Unlike chlorine, UV light does not create disinfection by-products (DBPs), the company said. Some DBPs, such as trihalomethanes, have been linked to increased risk of cancer and birth defects.
