Texas Nanodevice Company Launched

AUSTIN, Texas, April 28 -- A team of veterans from the nanotechnology field and the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and semiconductor industries have announced the launch of NanoVance Inc., a company that integrates those technologies to provide nanodevices.

NanoVance's management team includes two former executives of the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium (NJNC), a former leader of Rosemount Inc.'s MEMS technical development and fabrication programs and executives from the semiconductor industry.

"We give both engineers and entrepreneurs the means to bring viable nanodevice ideas to the marketplace," said Ellery R. Buchanan, chairman, CEO and co-founder of NanoVance. Buchanan is the former executive vice president of the NJNC. He was also the founder, chairman and CEO of Integrated Solutions Inc. and a former senior vice president of marketing and corporate development for Ultratech Inc., which purchased Integrated Solutions in 1998.

Daniel S. Nelson, president, COO and co-founder of NanoVance, said the company leverages the fab capacity and technical expertise of its partners to develop and manufacture customer devices.

Nelson, who most recently was director of strategic marketing and corporate development for August Technology Inc., served for nine years with Rosemount Inc., leading its MEMS technical development and fabrication programs for military and aerospace applications.

Larry Thompson, the former CEO of the NJNC, is NanoVance's CTO. He worked at Bell Labs for 25 years and holds 28 patents in the areas of semiconductor processing and materials engineering.

NanoVance will initially focus on several high-growth areas: medical/biotech, IT and data storage and wireless communications. Devices developed for these industries will also have potential applications in defense, aerospace, automotive and consumer technologies.

microelectromechanical systems
Refers to micron-size complex machines that have physical dimensions suitable for the fabrication of optical switches for use in state-of-the-art communications networks.
nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
