THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., April 10, 2014 — Teledyne Technologies Inc. and its subsidiary, Teledyne Instruments Inc., have acquired Photon Machines Inc. (PMI). Specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition will bring PMI’s laser ablation systems to Teledyne, which provides extraction of material at extreme spatial resolution. Laser ablation along with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) allows for accurate determination of trace elements when sample sizes may be less than one microgram. It can also analyze the variation in trace elements at locations a few microns apart.

The systems are used in applications including medical research, forensic science and materials science.
