TSA Orders L-3 Explosives Detectors

NEW YORK, Aug. 3 -- L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems Inc., a subsidiary of L-3 Communications, announced it has received a $33 million order from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to provide 37 additional eXaminer 3DX 6000 explosives detection systems to airports nationwide.

The contract provides for a three-year ordering period for explosives detection system (EDS) machines, spare parts and related engineering services. It supplements prior agreements with the TSA for eXaminer systems, which use advanced computed tomography for 3-D imaging of baggage during inspection. The new EDS systems will be integrated into airports' automated checked baggage conveyor systems. L-3 said they will offer a faster, more customer-friendly solution for screening baggage for explosives.

The company said it has been working closely with airports, airlines and the TSA to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the eXaminer. The TSA is currently operating in-line eXaminer EDS systems in Boston; Manchester, N.H.; Orange County, Calif.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Tampa, Fla., airports, in-line systems using the eXaminer are under construction in Las Vegas; Ontario; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Harrisburg, Pa. Moer than 500 eXaminer systems and 100 integrated systems are being deployed to date.
