FocalSpec has been acquired by TKH Group NV, where it will join the LMI Technologies Group under TKH. The FocalSpec unit in Oulu, Finland, will continue its current operations focused on product development and operations for line confocal imaging, while gaining additional resources and platforms from the LMI Group’s existing metrology operations. FocalSpec’s line confocal imaging is used to measure surface height variation and can scan glass and opaque materials in both 2D and 3D at high resolution and speed. The acquisition strengthens TKH’s position within the machine vision market. “Line confocal sensors offer a leap in technological performance for scanning opaque, transparent, and curved materials, such as hybrid glass assemblies common in cellphone manufacturing,” said Terry Arden, CEO of LMI Technologies. “By combining this game-changing optical approach with our proven Gocator inspection software and volume manufacturing know-how, customers will be able to solve challenging inline metrology applications at a price/performance and ease of use never seen in the market today.” FocalSpec was founded in 2009 as a spinoff from VTT, the National Technical Research Institute of Finland. Apart from VTT, the company’s owners included Nordic Option, Veritas Pension Insurance, Sauli Törmälä, and several other private investors.
