Stellantis Strengthens ADAS Commitment with Steerlight Investment

Lidar technology company SteerLight has received an investment from Stellantis Ventures, the corporate venture fund of automotive manufacturer Stellantis N.V. SteerLight is a producer of compact frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) lidar systems based on silicon photonics technology. The CEA-Leti spinoff is targeting advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), an area of focus for Stellantis.

Terms of the investment were not disclosed. SteerLight also plans to address industrial and mobility applications.

Steerlight's FMCW technology provides accurate depth and velocity data while resisting interference from the surrounding environment and other users. According to SteerLight, their lidar systems offer higher resolution and precision with lower production costs than those that are currently available. Other developers of FMCW lidar solutions include Scantinel Photonics, SiLC Technologies, Ommatidia, and Aeva.

Glossary
lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
augmented reality
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that integrates digital information, typically in the form of computer-generated graphics, images, or data, with the real-world environment in real-time. AR enhances the user's perception of the physical world by overlaying or combining digital content onto the user's view of the real world, often through devices like smartphones, tablets, smart glasses, or specialized AR headsets. Key features and principles of augmented reality: Real-time...
