Standard MEMS Opens Microphotonics Technology Center

BURLINGTON, Mass., May 8 -- With the opening of a new Microphotonics Technology Center based in Southbridge, Mass. Standard MEMS hopes to zero in on Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems and the packaging of MOEMS components. In addition, the Microphotonics Group will concentrate on integrated optics, fiber optics, active and passive photonic components, and optical systems integration.
Applications for photonic MEMS are rapidly expanding. In the telecommunications segment, there are major opportunities for photonic MEMS in optical core and edge switches, and substantial opportunities in other optical networking components including, signal attenuators, power level equalizers in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems, polarization mode dispersion compensators, and tunable optical sources. The Standard MEMS, Inc. Microphotonics Technology Center is a natural extension of the Company's technological resources and allows us to provide our customers with dedicated avenue for development of photonic MEMS devices, said Nicholas E. Ortyl, president & CEO of Standard MEMS.
