Space Is Filling Up for the AIM Photonics Summer Academy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 25, 2019 — Join fellow students and colleagues from the photonics industries for a week of intensive short courses on integrated photonics, taking place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass., this summer from July 22-26. The AIM Photonics Summer Academy will offer two education tracks on photonic integrated circuit (PIC) fundamentals and applied PIC design.

The PIC Fundamentals track will include courses on photonic integrated circuit systems-level drivers, materials and devices, process design kit, chip fabrication and manufacturing, process variation, integrated photonics area applications, chip packaging, and optical/electrical test characterization.

The Applied PIC Design track will offer workshops in PIC design with AIM-compatible automated software, integrated photonics area applications, chip packaging, and test characterization. Attendees will meet and work with electronic photonic design automation (EPDA) tool providers from Synopsys, Lumerical, and Mentor. Registration in either education track will give attendees the opportunity to collaborate with a design team to present a project that synthesizes their learning objectives.

Students ranging from beginners at the senior undergraduate level to faculty interested in starting an integrated photonics track at their schools will benefit from their week at the AIM Photonics Summer Academy. The content will prepare professional engineers in the electronic and photonic hardware industries for use of the latest integrated photonic technology and its EPDA modeling and layout tools. Executives and technologists including planners, engineers, and scientists participating in the optical and electronic components technology supply chain will acquire a working knowledge of the field.

Glossary
integrated photonics
Integrated photonics is a field of study and technology that involves the integration of optical components, such as lasers, modulators, detectors, and waveguides, on a single chip or substrate. The goal of integrated photonics is to miniaturize and consolidate optical elements in a manner similar to the integration of electronic components on a microchip in traditional integrated circuits. Key aspects of integrated photonics include: Miniaturization: Integrated photonics aims to...
