Shubham Chandel, a doctoral candidate studying biomedical optics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, has been named the recipient of this year’s Teddi C. Laurin Scholarship.

Chandel’s areas of study include light scattering and polarimetry in biophotonics research.

He plans to use funding from the scholarship to conduct research in biomedical optics at Laboratoire de Physique des Interfaces et des Couches Minces (LPICM) in France, in conjunction with researchers Tatiana Novikova and Razvigor Ossokoviskiat. The work involves use of a Mueller matrix imaging system operating in both elastic scattering and fluorescence polarimetric imaging for advanced disease diagnostics.

Chandel earned a master’s degree from the International School of Photonics in 2013. He has published three papers as lead author and eight as co-author. An active member of his local student chapter of SPIE, Chandel has served as a teaching assistant in advanced optics labs and has mentored summer interns.

“We congratulate Shubham on his impressive accomplishments and being named this year’s scholarship winner,” said Tom Laurin, president of Laurin Publishing. “When we established the award in my mother’s name several years ago, the intent was to help students such as Shubham make their mark in the industry.”

Photonics Media and partner SPIE fund the $5000 annual scholarship named for the late Teddi C. Laurin, founder of Laurin Publishing Co.
