Shimadzu Partners with Cerno

COLUMBIA, Md., March 17, 2010 -- Shimadzu Scientific Instruments announced that it is partnering with Cerno Bioscience of Danbury, Conn., a company that applies mathematical techniques to mass spectrometry.

The companies will offer Shimadzu’s liquid chromatography mass spectrometry quadrupole systems along with Cerno’s MassWorks software to improve data calibration and provide more accurate mass determination. In conjunction with Shimadzu’s LCMSsolution software, the package utilizes Cerno’s patented MSIntegrity calibration technology to improve mass accuracy by up to 100 times, while enhancing spectral accuracy on unit mass resolution mass spectrometers.

With both companies' proprietary software, researchers can perform compound identification through elemental composition prediction — a capability usually available only on high-resolution systems at significantly higher cost.

Glossary
mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular composition and structure of compounds based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). It involves ionizing chemical substances to generate ions, separating these ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio using electric and magnetic fields, and detecting and quantifying these ions to create a mass spectrum. Ionization: Samples are ionized using techniques such as electron impact ionization, electrospray ionization...
