COLUMBIA, Md., April 9, 2012 — Shimadzu Scientific Instruments opened the Shimadzu Center for Advanced Analytical Chemistry at the University of Texas at Arlington to give researchers at the university access to enhanced capabilities for trace qualitative and quantitative analysis.

The center is located in the chemistry and physics building and contains $6 million of chromatography, mass spectrometry and spectroscopy equipment.

“This equipment will provide opportunities for faculty and for students in a laboratory that is truly on the cutting edge of analytical possibilities,” said James D. Spaniolo, university president.

Shimadzu’s instruments will be used to research illnesses such as cancer and malaria, and to develop nanofabrication materials for industry.

In concert with the opening of the center, Kevin Schug was named the Shimadzu Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry. Schug is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry and will oversee the new laboratory.

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments is the US subsidiary of Shimadzu Corp., which comprises three major divisions: Medical Diagnostics, Aerospace/Industrial and Analytical Instruments.

Glossary
chromatography
The chemical method of separating compounds dissolved in one phase (usually mobile) through its equilibration with a second phase (usually stationary). The mechanism of separation may involve partition, adsorption, permeation or exclusion, or ion exchange.
mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular composition and structure of compounds based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). It involves ionizing chemical substances to generate ions, separating these ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio using electric and magnetic fields, and detecting and quantifying these ions to create a mass spectrum. Ionization: Samples are ionized using techniques such as electron impact ionization, electrospray ionization...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
