SHANGHAI, China, May 3, 2006 -- Germany-based technology company Schott announced it has opened Wuxi Unique Schott Optical Co. Ltd. in the Wuxi National High Technology Development Zone, about 100 miles northwest of Shanghai, to make optical glass blanks used in digital imaging and projection devices.
Schott said a total of $8 million has been invested in the new facility, which will employ 200 people by May, when production of optical glass banks is scheduled to begin. It said the company's central location will give customers in and around China better service and will substantially reduce lead times.
Wuxi Unique Schott Optical Co. will combine Schott's processing equipment and raw glass with the expertise of Unique Optical Industrial Co. Ltd., which manufactures and trades various optical instruments, camera lenses and similar products, Schott said. Unique Optical is based in Taichung, Taiwan.
Schott's Optics for Devices units makes optical glass and glass ceramics for manufacturers in the display production equipment, digital imaging and projection, laser technology, metrology, astronomy, semiconductor and other industries.
