Schneider Lenses Used in NASA Shuttle

NASA has selected Schneider lenses for two space shuttle flight safety systems as part of its Shuttle Return to Flight program. It will use a Xenoplan f/2.8, 50-mm compact C-mount lens from Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH of Bad Kreuznach, Germany, on the shuttle’s orbital inspection boom. The inspection system incorporates cameras and a laser ranging system for scanning the orbiter’s exterior for damage while in flight, enabling astronauts to repair it before re-entry into the atmosphere. The product satisfies NASA’s requirements for a compact lens that can withstand the g forces and vibrations of shuttle launches.

In other business, lens and professional filter manufacturer Schneider Optics Inc. of Hauppauge, N.Y., has formed a national photo/video support team led by its director of sales and marketing, Barry Rubin. He will work with staff and sales representatives to integrate the company’s digital photography and videography efforts.
