Rugged Fiber Expands Surgical and Sensor Applications

Improvements in sapphire optical fiber has aided the expansion of the Er:YAG laser in medical applications, such as dentistry. The fiber's rugged characteristics, such as its high melting point, also make it useful for sensor applications in hostile environments such as semiconductor processing.
