SAN DIEGO, Aug. 14, 2023 — SPIE’s five-day Optics + Photonics trade show and exhibition will return to the San Diego Convention Center Aug. 20-24, with the company exhibition portion scheduled to run Aug. 22-24. Attendees can expect over 2200 presentations in a multitude of photonics-related fields. Optics + Photonics 2023 will comprise sessions in over 50 conference topics, with plenary talks, technical presentations, and industry courses offered with professional development opportunities and an onsite job fair.

Design and engineering inspired symposia

Nanoscience, organic photonics, and optical engineering will feature as the three symposia for this year’s program. Fifty-three technical conferences will welcome guests in technology areas spanning meta-, quantum, and organic materials; sustainable energy and energy sources; remote sensing; plasmonics; and more.

Seven plenaries build on last year’s conference total, and will commence Sunday evening, Aug. 20, with a lineup chaired by SPIE president Bernard Kress. Scheduled speakers are Joseph Berry, of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory; Jenny Clark, of the University of Sheffield; and Alexandra Boltasseva, from Purdue University and the Quantum Science Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Other plenaries will run through Aug. 23 and end with a session on astronomical optics and instrumentation led by the Space Telescope Science Institute’s John MacKenty.

Multiday exhibition

Companies spanning the gamut of optics and photonics technologies have confirmed their attendance for the multiday industry exhibition and showcase. Exhibiting companies include Coherent, Cryslaser, Avantier, Hamamatsu, Reynard, and many more. Companies from the Americas, Europe, and Asia will be present on the show floor. The exhibition aims to promote dialogue and idea sharing around components, devices, and systems. New and enhanced commercial offerings in optical metrology, filters, cameras and imaging systems, lasers, and more will be on display.

In the lead-up to the exhibition, companies are sharing product and preview announcements on the show’s webpage, accessible via www.spie.org. New product offerings can be found, with additional exhibition information.

Special Events

Special and debut events run through the entirety of the conference, for industry members in all disciplines.

A heliostat-specific networking event on Sunday, Aug. 20, follows a panel discussion on heliostats, and provides a platform for the SPIE research community and those interested in concentrated solar power and solar energy to socialize with U.S. Department of Energy representatives, industrial stakeholders, and subject-matter experts. The event is part of the Advances in Solar Energy: Heliostat Systems Design, Implementation, and Operation conference, chaired by industry leaders from three continents.

SPIE members will be eligible to attend the Annual General Meeting of the SPIE Corp. on Tuesday evening, Aug. 22. The meeting will include a report from the president as well as a Q&A with SPIE officers. The meeting will also yield 2023 election results from the society. In addition, the SPIE Awards Banquet and Celebration will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 23. Tickets are required for this event.
